Brrr! The Java Team just dropped Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 6 on October 27, 2026, and it’s bringing a flurry of frosty new features. Whether you’re a builder looking for fresh winter blocks or an adventurer who loves clever new mobs, this snapshot has something for you. Let’s dive in — just make sure you’ve got a warm coat.
What’s in This Snapshot?
As the Java Team joked in their official announcement: “It’s getting chilly in here!” This update expands the ice-themed content that began earlier in the 26.4 cycle (hello, Ice Caves and Frostbites) with a brand-new building block set and a fascinating twist on an existing mob. Plus, there are some nice technical tweaks under the hood. This is all for Édition Java only, so Bedrock players will have to sit tight.
“A new Sulfur Cube archetype that belongs to the special archetype category […] replaces water below it with a disk of Frosted Ice when it moves, similar to the Frost Walker enchantment” — Java Team (Mojang)
Snow Bricks: A Builder’s Winter Dream
Say hello to Snow Bricks, your new go-to for icy castles, frosty fortresses, or just a cute snowy cottage. You craft them by placing 4 Snow Blocks in a 2×2 square in your crafting grid — that gives you 4 Snow Bricks. From there, you can turn them into Slabs, Stairs, and Walls using the usual stonecutter or crafting table recipes.
One important note for survival builders: Snow Bricks and their variants only drop themselves when mined with a Shovel. Using any other tool (or your fist) will break them without a drop, so keep that shovel handy!
Cold Sulfur Cube: Frost Walker on the Go
The Sulfur Cube, that bouncy, sliding mob, just got a chilly upgrade. By getting a Sulfur Cube to absorb a Blue Ice block, it transforms into the new Cold Sulfur Cube archetype. This special version behaves like the “Fast Sliding” archetype but with an extra trick: it floats on water and, while moving across it, creates a temporary path of Frosted Ice beneath itself. Think of it as a mobile Frost Walker enchantment.
This opens up fun possibilities for ice bridges, automated farms, or just marveling at a cube that freezes lakes as it zooms by. The Cold Sulfur Cube is categorized as a “special archetype,” so it’s a little rarer, but well worth finding or setting up.
Other Changes & Tweaks
There’s more than just snow and ice in this snapshot. Here are the highlights you should know:
- Smarter JVM memory settings: The default Java launch options now automatically set heap size to up to 25% of your system RAM, capped at 4 GB. If you’ve never messed with JVM arguments, this means better performance right out of the box.
- Lava fall damage reduced: Mobs (and presumably players) falling through lava may take slightly less fall damage now. A small but welcome change for nether adventures.
- Ice Crystal ambience: Ice Crystal blocks get new ambient sounds that play occasionally — but only if the block is sitting on top of Packed Ice. Great for atmospheric ice caves.
- Data Pack version 125.1 & Resource Pack version 101.0: Creators and modders, update your packs accordingly.
- Structure pool improvement: A new
corner_constraintfield lets map makers place structure elements based on density functions at their bounding-box corners. A powerful tool for custom world generation.
How to Install the Snapshot
Ready to jump in? It’s easy — but remember, snapshots are test versions that can corrupt worlds. Always back up your saves first.
- Open your Minecraft Launcher.
- Click the Installations tabulation.
- Activer Snapshots in the top-right corner.
- Create a new installation, choose the latest snapshot (26w06a or similar naming — look for “Snapshot 6”), and give it a name.
- Launch the game and enjoy the frosty fun!
That’s a wrap on Snapshot 6. Snow Bricks give builders a whole new palette, the Cold Sulfur Cube adds some playful mobility magic, and the tech improvements make life easier for everyone. As we inch closer to the full 26.4 release, expect even more ice and cave goodness. Stay frosty, and check back here for more guides and breakdowns!
